Uncovering the Elevator

On Sunday July 17th we uncovered the elevator and sat up the guide posts.

There are several straps holding down two tarps that cover the elevator to prevent leaks on the Tank Deck.

This is a new cover since the old one wasn't working anymore.

The tarp is large enough that it takes everyone to lift it carefully so it doesn't drag.

It is placed out of the way.  You can see Chris Donahue's 1944 Jeep on the Main Deck.  It looks right at home and is generally on display during fair weather weekends on ship.

It takes a lot of volunteers to unlatch the safety mechanisms holding the elevator in place.

Checking the cable to prevent overlapping.

Andrew Schade learns how to operate the winch  to lower the elevator.  There are many breakers and failsafes involved, check out our Facebook page for more pictures of the breaker boxes and the hidden compartments on ship by clicking here!https://www.facebook.com/USS-LST-Ship-Memorial-Inc-388475534512053/photos/?tab=album&album_id=1510854248940837

John Engstrom shows Andrew Schade how to operate the scissor lift to unhook the safety chains on the guide posts.

Mason Dennis helps guide the post down while Kenneth Grant slacks the line.

Allen Douglass helps secure the guide post while Mason adjusts the height.

The elevator is ready for use.  Check out our Facebook page for lots more pictures and video to come!  https://www.facebook.com/USS-LST-Ship-Memorial-Inc-388475534512053/
